is spiderman 4 cancelled?

The last two decades have offered fans a lot of superhero cinema, but for many, nothing beats the nostalgia of revisiting Spider-Man.

Directed by Sam Raimi (of Evil Dead fame), this comic book adaptation continued the trend after Bryan Singer's X-Men and cemented the genre as a box office hit.

Tobey Maguire played the titular web-slinger, bringing a depth to Peter Parker that resonated with audiences everywhere. It certainly wasn't a surprise to see a sequel arrive a couple of years later.

Spider-Man 2 was critically acclaimed, but 2007's Spider-Man 3 was much more divisive and ultimately turned out to be Sam Raimi's final entry, with a reboot starring Andrew Garfield in 2012.

However, there were actually plans for a fourth Raimi movie, so why was Spider-Man 4 canceled?

Spider-Man 4 was canceled because Sam Raimi was not satisfied with the way the project was taking shape. He went on to explain that he couldn't land on a script he was happy with, so he and Sony agreed that it was better to drop the movie.

As Collider noted, the 61-year-old director said of the sequel's fate:

“It really was the friendliest and least dramatic breakup - it was just that we had a deadline and I couldn't make the story work on a level that I wanted it to work on. He was very unhappy with Spider-Man 3, and wanted to make Spider-Man 4 end on a very high note, the best Spider-Man ever. But I couldn't put the script together in time, due to my own flaws. "

He added: “I told Sony, 'I don't want to make a movie that's less than great, so I think we shouldn't do this movie. Get on with your reboot, which you've been planning anyway. "

In fact, shortly after the official cancellation of Spider-Man 4, Sony revealed that James Vanderbilt

had already written a reboot, The Amazing Spider-Man, for a 2012 release.

SPIDER-MAN 4: WHO WAS THE VILLAIN?

The villain in Spider-Man 4 would have been Vulture, who would later appear in Spider-Man: Homecoming (played by Michael Keaton).

Sam started working with screenwriter James Vanderbilt in 2008 and was determined to have John Malkovich play the iconic villain.

Looking further back, Sam really considered Ben Kinglsey playing the Vulture in Spider-Man 3, but the character was eventually cut from the third movie.

As work on Spider-Man 4 progressed, Sony made it clear that they wanted Lizard to be the villain, so it makes sense for this to be the villain in the 2012 reboot.
